Antibiotic sensitivity of gonococci and treatment of gonorrhoea in Uganda.

چکیده
VENEREAL disease, especially gonorrhoea, is of very common occurrence among students of Makerere University College, in Kampala, Uganda (Arya and Bennett; 1967, 1968), and this provides an excellent opportunity for the study of the treatment of gonorrhoea. Most patients are seen by one doctor, and almost all can be followed up until it is clear that they are either free from infection or have been re-infected. Furthermore they are prepared to be frank about reexposure, making it relatively easy to distinguish true failures of treatment from re-infection. This study was aimed at determining the minimum useful dose of the various preparations ofpenicillin or tetracycline available to us for the treatment of acute gonococcal urethritis in males. The minimum inhibitory concentration (M.I.C.) of penicillin was determined for all strains of gonococci isolated.

Is gonococcal sensitivity to antibiotics increasing in Norway?
Penicillin is widely known as the best and most suitable remedy in the treatment of gonorrhoea, but gonococcal sensitivity to penicillin decreased in Norway as well as in other countries (Gjessing, 1959; Gjessing and Odegaard, 1964; Galstrin and Kallings, 1964; Reyn, Bentzon, Thayer, and Wilkinson, 1965). Sensitivity to penicillin has been found to vary considerably in gonococci isolated from d...

Penicillin is still satisfactory as the main treatment for gonorrhoea in Uganda, but there is evidence that its usefulness is declining. In 1961, there was a treatment failure rate of only 4 per cent. with a single dose of 0-3 mega units penicillin aluminium mono-stearate (PAM) (Kibukamusoke, 1965); four times that dose-1V2 mega units-gave a failure' rate of 17-9 per cent. in 1966 (Arya, unpubl...

Cefuroxime, a new antibiotic derived from cephalosporin-C which is very stable in the presence of beta-lactamases produced by Gram-negative organisms, was used to treat 856 male patients and 340 female patients with uncomplicated gonorrhoea. In men the drug was used in three different doses, 1.5 g, 1 g, and 750 mg plus 1 g probenecid; in women 1 g and 750 mg cefuroxime plus 1 g probenecid was u...
متن کاملThe antibiotic susceptibility of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolated in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.
Introduction The incidence and prevalence of gonorrhoea in Mongolia appear to be high and increasing. Progress towards control of gonorrhoea requires the availability of eVective antibiotic treatment. However, the susceptibility of Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolated in Mongolia is diYcult to ascertain. A brief report some years ago noted “substantial” resistance to penicillins and quinolones and, s...
متن کاملA comparison of the in vitro sensitivity of gonococci to penicillin with the results of treatment.
The great success which followed the adoption of penicillin as the drug of choice for the treatment of gonorrhoea, coming as it did at a time when the organism was becoming increasingly resistant to the sulphonamides, led to hopes that the control of gonorrhoea might be in sight. Although in Great Britain and other countries there was a marked decline in the number of reported cases in the imme...
